Journeys, frequency caps and holdouts
Show offers at the right moment in the cart and at checkout, cap how often shoppers see them, and measure the difference with a holdout.
A journey puts your offers in front of shoppers at set moments — while they look at their cart, or when they press Checkout. You decide which products start it, how often one shopper may see it, and whether to hold some shoppers back to measure what it's worth.
Journeys are available on the Growth and Scale plans.
Before you start#
A journey shows offers you have already created. Each step's offer must be live for shoppers to see it — a step on a draft or archived offer is called out by name on the journey. See Offers overview and go-live checks.
Create a journey#
- Open Journeys and press Create journey.
- Starts when — choose which products it watches under Matches: Any product, A collection or Specific products.
- Moments — add an offer to each moment you want to use:
- In cart — shown in the cart drawer's offer slot;
- Checkout click — shown when the shopper presses Checkout in the drawer, before they go to checkout.
- Frequency — choose under Show this journey (below).
- Measure — optionally Hold shoppers out (below).
- Press Turn on (or Turn on with holdout), then push live.
Journeys that run in the cart need your PageStax cart design to be published.
Frequency caps#
| Setting | What shoppers experience |
|---|---|
| Once per session (the default) | The checkout step shows once per visit; the in-cart step can show throughout the visit. A new visit starts afresh. A visit ends after 30 minutes of inactivity. |
| Once per shopper — every N days | The journey runs in one visit, then not again for that shopper until N days have passed. |
| Every time | Shown on every trigger, including every Checkout click. |
Caps are remembered in the shopper's browser.
Holdouts#
A holdout keeps a small share of eligible shoppers — for example 10% — from ever seeing the journey, so you can compare the two groups. Held-out shoppers see your ordinary cart, and Checkout takes them straight to checkout.
Turning on Hold shoppers out creates a Journey holdout A/B test as a draft. The holdout is measured from the moment you start that test in A/B tests. Who is held out is decided per shopper and stays the same across visits.
Plan limits#
Growth allows 3 live journeys at a time; Scale has no limit.
