Cross-sells and add-ons

Two cart elements help shoppers add one more thing: an in-cart offer slot that suggests a product, and an add-on toggle for an optional extra.

Cross-sells in the cart#

A cross-sell suggests a related product in the cart drawer or on /cart. It can be offered:

• at full price — the product's normal price, no discount code needed; or
• with a discount — backed by a Shopify discount code.

Either way it must point at a real variant, so accepting it adds a real line to the Shopify cart. A suggestion with no variant is refused at go-live, because it would never reach checkout.

To show cross-sells, your cart design needs an in-cart offer slot (or an in-cart upsell element). The slot shows only live offers placed there, or the offer of a journey step that runs in the cart. When nothing real matches, it shows nothing — there are no placeholder suggestions.

Add-on toggles#

An add-on toggle is a tick box in the cart — gift wrapping, an extended warranty, a card message. When the shopper ticks it, a real product is added to the cart as its own line; unticking removes it.

1. Select the add-on element in your cart design.
2. In Content, set the title, description and whether it starts ticked.
3. In the Data group, choose the variant it adds — or press Create add-on product in Shopify.

Create add-on product in Shopify creates an active product for you that is not published to your Online Store, so it doesn't appear in your catalogue or search but can still be added to carts.

Order and priority#

If more than one live offer fits the same slot, higher priority wins. In the Offers tab, set Priority in slot to Low, Normal or High.

Make them live#

Offers start as drafts. Take an offer live (it is checked against Shopify first), then push live. See Offers overview and go-live checks.
